Der io9-Autor Jess Nevins hat mal wieder eine echte Perle des 19.Jahrhunderts ausgegraben, diesmal allerdings auf der negativen Scala. Neben H.G. Wells und Jules Verne, gab es auch viele andere Autoren, die sich an fantastische Literatur versucht haben. Mit deutlich weniger Erfolg und Talent.
Alleine der Titel des Romans von Simon Mohler Landis “An Entirely New Feature of a Thrilling Novel! Entitled the Social War of the Year 1900, or Conspirators and Lovers. A Lesson for Saints and Sinners.” ist schon beeindruckend (inklusive eines ! darin).
Ein kleiner Ausschnitt zeigt die Qualitäten des Autors (und seine Liebe zum Semikolon):

Die Definition von Steampunk ist schwierig, was darf man als Steampunk bezeichnen und was ist es nicht? Zu Beginn der Bewegung war gerade das fehlen von Definitionen einer der Motoren immer neue Ideen und Kreationen in das Genre zu bringen. Aber es ist ein menschliches Bedürfnis sich abzugrenzen, zu sagen: Das ist meins und was ihr mach ist anders, vielleicht sogar falsch. Jess Nevins hat sich in seinem Artikel “It’s time to rethink Steampunk” des Problems angenommen und ist zu einer spannenden Version gekommen.
We’re used to defining things in an is/is-not way. But the truth is that there are several critical terms similar to “steampunk” whose definitions are similarly fuzzy, including “hard-boiled,” “noir,” “pulp,” and “slapstick.” All of these terms have been used so broadly since their inception their current definitions have strayed inseparably far from their original definitions. “Hard-boiled” et al. are now terms applied in as many different contexts as “steampunk” is now, and with the fuzzy logic approach I think steampunk users should adopt.
Der Science-Fiction Literaturpreis Hugo wird erst seit 1953 vergeben. Das findet Jess Nevins, Experte für klassische Science Fiction und Pulp Literatur bei Tor und io9, mehr als bedauerlich, denn so würden fast 100 Jahre an guter fantastischer Literatur völlig übersehen. In dem Artikel The Victorian Hugos berichtet er über die Idee diese Lücke zu füllen und eine Serie bei Tor darüber zu starten.
 Für io9 hat Jess Nevins mal wieder eine Perle ausgegraben: Eine Ballade über einen Dampfarm, wahrscheinlich aus dem Jahr 1834/1835, die vielleicht die erste Erwähnung eines Cyborgs ist, dessen Körperteil sich dann auch noch gegen ihn wendet. Jetzt fehlt nur noch ein Musiker, der den Zeilen wieder Noten einhaucht.

Nach dem Jess Nevins sich in seinen letzten Artikeln für io9 mit der Geschichte des Pulps beschäftigt hat, widmet er sich nun den “Badass Women of the Pulp Era“.
The pulps of the world were full of tough men. The iconic pulp characters — the Shadow, Doc Savage, Tarzan — are all men, and the common perception of the pulps is that they were written by male writers, about male characters, for male readers.
However, the pulps were more progressive than mainstream fiction (and film and comic strips, etc.) in a number of respects, including and especially the number of formidable female characters who appeared in them.

Aus einer älteren Meldung wissen wir, dass das Baxter Building der Fantastic Four seine Raketenabgase direkt in den Fluss ableitet. Die Zeichnungen der Superhelden Wohnungen sind von höchster politischer Brisanz!
